Before Your First Card Show: What to Know
Your first card show can feel like a lot — tables everywhere, everyone seems to know each other, and it's not always obvious where to start. Here's what actually matters.
Get there early
The best cards move fast, often within the first hour. If there's a specific card or box you want, showing up at opening beats showing up after lunch.
Prices are often negotiable
Not always, and not with everyone, but it's normal to ask "is that your best price?" or offer slightly under asking, especially for higher-value cards. Worst case, they say no.
Bring your own supplies
Don't assume every vendor sells penny sleeves or top loaders at the table. Bring your own so a good pull doesn't sit exposed while you go looking for protection.
If you bring cards, price them beforehand
Planning to sell or trade while you're there? Decide what you want for your cards before you arrive. It's faster for everyone, and it's a lot easier than pricing on the spot with someone waiting.
Cash is king
Many vendors don't take cards, and the ones who do sometimes tack on a fee. Bring enough cash for what you're hoping to walk away with, plus a bit more.
Be a good person!
This hobby runs on a pretty small, close-knit community. Be polite, don't lowball insultingly, and remember everyone at that table is there because they love this as much as you do. The vendor you chat with today might be the one with your grail card next month.
Your first show is mostly about getting a feel for how it works — you'll walk out knowing exactly what to do differently next time, and that's half the fun.
