Kids at Card Shows: A Parent's Guide to a Fun First Visit

Card shows are more kid-friendly than people expect — no crowds shoving past strollers, no loud music, and plenty of vendors who light up when a kid asks about their favorite player or Pokémon. But a good visit with kids takes a little more planning than one for an adult going solo.

Check the admission policy before you go

Most shows let kids in free or at a steep discount, usually somewhere around 10-12 and under, but the exact age cutoff varies show to show. It's worth a quick look at the listing or a message to the organizer beforehand so you're not surprised at the door.

Give them a budget and let them own it

A set amount of cash, entirely theirs to spend, turns a show into an actual activity instead of a place they're dragged along to. Small bills matter here too — a kid working with a $20 in ones and fives can make their own decisions at table after table without needing change.

Pack snacks and water

Convention centers and hotel ballrooms rarely have great food options nearby, and a hungry kid two hours in is a kid who's done with the show whether you are or not. A granola bar and a water bottle in your bag costs nothing and buys you real extra time on the floor.

Let them talk to vendors themselves

This is the part parents most often get in the way of without meaning to. A kid asking a vendor "do you have any Charizards?" or "what's your best rookie card?" is doing exactly what makes this hobby fun, and most vendors genuinely enjoy talking to young collectors. Step back and let the conversation happen.

Plan for a shorter visit than you'd do alone

An adult can happily browse a show for three or four hours. Most kids are good for one, maybe two, before attention starts to fade. Pick the sections or vendors you most want to see first, and treat anything beyond that as a bonus rather than the plan.
